just an inspiring story to keep this blog updated

A true story by Vic Gundotra

One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore.

After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said.

Before I even reached my car, I called Steve Jobs back. I was responsible for all mobile applications at Google, and in that role, had regular dealings with Steve. It was one of the perks of the job.

"Hey Steve - this is Vic", I said. "I'm sorry I didn't answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn't pick up".

Steve laughed. He said, "Vic, unless the Caller ID said 'GOD', you should never pick up during services".

I laughed nervously. After all, while it was customary for Steve to call during the week upset about something, it was unusual for him to call me on Sunday and ask me to call his home. I wondered what was so important?

"So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I've already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow" said Steve.

"I've been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I'm not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn't have the right yellow gradient. It's just wrong and I'm going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?"

Of course this was okay with me. A few minutes later on that Sunday I received an email from Steve with the subject "Icon Ambulance". The email directed me to work with Greg Christie to fix the icon.

Since I was 11 years old and fell in love with an Apple II, I have dozens of stories to tell about Apple products. They have been a part of my life for decades. Even when I worked for 15 years for Bill Gates at Microsoft, I had a huge admiration for Steve and what Apple had produced.

But in the end, when I think about leadership, passion and attention to detail, I think back to the call I received from Steve Jobs on a Sunday morning in January. It was a lesson I'll never forget. CEOs should care about details. Even shades of yellow. On a Sunday.

To one of the greatest leaders I've ever met, my prayers and hopes are with you Steve.

quote from dramabeans, 'a straight-up, you-killed-my-father-now-prepare-to-die action-vengeance series'.

up to this 4th episode, it doesn't fail me.
load each episode at 8pm at night, so i get to fully watch it by 11pm without any disturbance (yes, from the baby, hubby, or tv series :p)

so, watch it online here!
pftt it'll take a zillion years to watch it on air in malaysia and to make it worst, the spoken language will be change to mandarin!

Marryan

after the very much hardwork and effort, together with all the time and money spent, she's making her debuts on 23 May 2011. yeay!

the shop

mother, daughter, and the cucu

to mama and uncle, we are so proud of you guys and again, a heartful CONGRATS!
so here's a little something-something words of encouragement

"When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow,
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit."

bumi jakarta

quite a few things happen to me lately
yet, so little time to tell here
life and work, are juggling in between
but i'd rather admit to myself ~ aku malas sebenarnye nak update
boo hoo

so last week, the 6 of us went to jakarta - me with hubby and najah, mommy, ekal and aunt liza
instead of taking direct flight to jakarta, we took a ferry to batam and flew from there to jakarta
much cheaper that way!
and it is also my very first time riding on a plane errr...
yes, at my age of 28 -_-'
lucky you najah! hehe

anyway, we went there not for holiday or anything like that
my mom is going to open up her boutique real soon, and we went there for the sake of buying, collecting materials and stuffs for the store
well initially, my mom only offers me to accompany her in jakarta, but being a mother(me) who just couldn't bear leaving her baby behind, tagged along everybody in the family

and yes, i don't wish to tell every details of my trip there
(malas kan nak fikir ayat bagai hehe)
so, i'm wrapping it all up in a few words
excited yet scared at the same time, joyful, SUPER tired, awesomeness!
and lastly, sgt susah nak cari proper meal kat sana!

ps: will upload the pics later!

Fashion Brands Pronunciation

BVLGARI

BVLGARI is an Italian fine jewelry house first opened in 1884 in Rome. Today, though, it also has leather goods, watches, perfumes, silks (ties and scarves) and more to its name. The name BVLGARI is written in Latin, so the letter that looks like a “V” is actually a “U”. So it’s pronounced Bulgari—BULL(like the animal)-GAHR(as in ‘garden’)-EE(like the letter “e”). In fact, if you type “bvlgari” into Google, it will lead you to the BVLGARI website, which is actually www.bulgari.com.

Chanel

This is a VERY important one! Some people might think it’s a no-brainer, but if I hear another person pronounce it “Channel” I will actually lose my mind. The House of Chanel was started in early 20th century France by the one and only Mademoiselle Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel. Chanel has fine women’s sportswear and eveningwear and is run today by Karl Lagerfeld (pronounced “Carl Loggerfelld”). Chanel is properly pronounced “Sha-nelle”, “Sha” like in “shove” and “nelle” like in the name “Nell”. Chanel.

Givenchy

It’s true, these French names can be difficult, but this is another important one. Hubert de Givenchy opened the House of Givenchy in 1952, alongside greats like Christian Dior and Balenciaga. He was also the chief designer for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn. Though Givenchy himself retired in 1995, the Givenchy Femme line is perpetuated by Italian designer Riccardo Tisci. Givenchy is pronounced with a French “J” sound, a soft “jz” made with the tip of the tongue, almost like saying “shh”. So it’s “jzhiv-on-shee”, since the French “e” makes a long “o” sound, and the “ch” is a “sh” sound. Givenchy.

Hermès

Known for its little orange logo, Hermès is a French company begun in 1837 by Emile Hermès. It produces fine leather goods, like handbags and wallets, and fine silk goods, like scarves and ties, among other things like perfume, shoes, jewelry and more. Hermès is pronounced “AIR-MEZZ”, not “HER-MEEZ”. So when you see the little orange logo, you know what to say. Hermès.

Tommy Hilfiger

Making his first collection in 1985, Tommy Hilfiger has since grown to include not only menswear and women’s wear, but children’s clothes, bedding, and more. The Hilfiger style is said to be classic Americana, and has many lines of denim and casual wear to back that up. You’d think that since this is an American designer, people might not butcher the pronunciation, but every so often I hear people say “Hillfigure” and it’s just not right. The correct pronunciation of this designer’s last name is “HILL- (like “hills and valleys”)- FIG- (like the fruit) ER (like in the word “nerd”). Hilfiger.

Yves Saint Laurent

Though he first worked for Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent introduced his own line in 1962. He invented several items of clothing, like the smoking jacket, the sheer blouse, and the jumpsuit. Though Saint Laurent retired in 2002, the label continues under the creative direction of Stefano Pilati. Saint Laurent believed that “dressing is a way of life” and is one of the most important, influential designers of the 20th century. His first name is pronounced “Eves” like “Christmas and New Year’s Eves”. “Saint Laurent” is his last name, pronounced “SAHN” like in “song” and “LORE-ONT” like “lore” in the word “folklore” and “ONT” like in the word “want.” Yves Saint Laurent.

Now, here are some guidance to pronounce other designer label names:

Anya Hindmarch: Ahn-ya Heind-march
Badgley Mischka: Badge-lee Meesh-ka
Bebe: Bee-bee
Bottega Veneta: Bo-tega Ven-e-ta
Bulgari: Ball-gah-ree
Burberry Prorsum: Bur-bur-ree Pror-some
Carolina Herrera: Caro-leena Hair-era
Christian Louboutin: Loo-boo-tin
Dolce & Gabbana: DOLE-chay and gab-BON-na
Gareth Pugh: Gareth Pew
Giles Deacon: Jy-els Dee-kin
Givenchy: Jhee-von-shee
Gucci: GOO-chi
Hedi Slimane: Eddy Sli-mahn
Hermès: Air-mez
Hervé Léger: Air-vay Lay-jay
Lanvin: Lon-vin
Loewe: Low-ev-ay
Louis Vuitton: Loo-ee Voo-ee-ton
Marchesa: Mar-kay-sa
Moschino: Mo-ski-no
Nicolas Ghesquière: Ni-co-la Guess-ki-air
Olivier Theyskens: Oli-vier Tay-skins
Pierre Cardin: Pee-air Car-dain
Proenza Schouler: Pro-enza Skool-er
Ralph Lauren: Ralph Lauren (as in Lauren the girl’s name, not Sophia Loren)
6267: Six-two-six-seven (not Sixty-two-sixty-seven)
Thakoon: Ta-koon
Thierry Mugler: Tee-air-ree Moog-lay
Versace: ver-SAH-chay
Yohji Yamamoto: Yo-jee Ya-ma-mo-to
Zegna: ZANE-ya

Well in this case Usop, fashion brands pronunciation ;) Hope this helps!

fairy tales...something to ponder upon

'How do you expect kids to listen to their parents as, Tarzan lives half naked, Cinderella comes back home at midnight, Pinocchio lies all the time, Aladdin is the king of thieves, Batman drives at 320KM/h, Sleeping beauty is lazy and Snow White lives with 7 guys. We shouldn’t be surprised if kids misbehave at times! They get this from their own storybooks.'

it's funny, yet there's some serious issues going on here
well, just a thot
lol~

+quoted from a friend's fb

chantek

last friday, i called my mom and asked her to pick me up at UTM to go out jalan-jalan for the lunch break. as a government servant, the lunch break on friday usually takes longer than usual due to the friday prayers.
and being a mom, who enjoys window shopping/shopping like i do, did not hesitate at all for the lame request and promised to pick me up. just so you know, i don't know how to drive a car yet boo-hoo. of course, i don't usually do this quite often. it just so happen that my husband is not around that day (busy with his diving at sibu island >.< )

later we decided to go to angsana.
most of the boutiques in angsana sell beautiful baju kurung, abayas, tudung and whatnot, BUT the price is slightly higher from the usual normal boutiques.sigh~
who cares! people still go anyway.

as we were walking and passing by all the boutiques, SNAP! there she was, being displayed, a very pretty baju kurung.
i am so in love with all the details especially the embroidery and the rhinestones embellishment around the neck.

ask the lady if i could try it on. voila, it fits perfectly and even my mom gave her approval. omg, this is so gonna be my baju raya for this year!
yes, the theme was already set. it's grey.
in fact i've already bought the fabric for mr momok's teluk belanga a few months back, but still struggling to find my own piece.
this should be the one, i told myself.
but the huge problem is the price, lol. it cost about RM250++ (before discount! huhu)
and i still haven't get my salary yet.sad~
but thankfully, my mom willing to pay for the baju but of course i have to pay her back-la.

hehe, mama, anda memang terbaik! love you much ok

also, on that day after work, i bought a cute old navy dress for najah.
we went to F.O.S. in city square. i spotted the dress and the item is marked half price. guess the real price?
it's only RM25. so, i just have to pay RM12.50.

now, that's what i called a great deal!

+ for najah +

make way for the Manny!

MANNY?
so, i guess from the pic above you'll get what i mean
another new korean drama which is on my must-watch list now

it has already run for 3 episodes and yes, i've watched all the 3 episodes yesterday
pheww in 1 day!
dowh, sanggup jer ~

anyway, the storyline is basically revolves around a pro male nanny, an absolutely exhausted/frazzled full time career mom, her two children; a daughter and a son, and the mom's super model sister

after watching it for the first time yesterday, i must say that the storyline is simple but yet it still has that sweet, hilarious and sincere touch
maybe you can visit here to get more insides of the drama
or if you would like to watch it online, go here

chemical reacts

my 15 months old daughter head-banging to this song
yep, no joke here
(0_o)Y

You make me feel out of my element
Like I'm walkin' on broken glass
Like my worlds spinnin' in slow motion
And you're movin' too fast

[Chorus]
Were you right, was I wrong
Were you weak, was I strong, yeah
Both of us broken
Caught in a moment
We lived and we loved
And we hurt and we jumped, yeah
But the planets all aligned
When you looked into my eyes
And just like that
The chemicals react
The chemicals react

You make me feel out of my element
Like I'm drifting out to the sea
Like the tides pullin' me in deeper
Makin' it harder to breathe

We cannot deny, how we feel inside
We cannot deny

[Chorus]

Kaleidoscope of colors
Turning hopes on fire, sun is burning
Shining down on both of us
Don’t let us lose it (don’t let us lose it...)

[Chorus]

We lived
We loved
We hurt
we jumped
We're right
We're wrong
We're weak
We're strong
We lived to love

But the planets all aligned
When you looked into my eyes
And just like that
Watch the chemicals react
And just like that
The chemicals react

tioman island and petanque

geez...it has been awhile!
last week was a very busy week for me
sigh~
so i'm wrapping it all in this one definite post

our trip to tioman

it was a blast!
even some of my friends were surprised that i could actually spent 3days on an island...well except for langkawi of course LOL
firstly, i was an absolute 'jakun' with the clear crystal water...seriously, you can see all the fishes swim here and there, together with the corals without even have to go for snorkeling or diving.
and secondly, never have i imagine that i would ride on a speed boat (with no roof or handle bars at all) while holding on to najah to go to a nearby village.

oh yes, besides the sunny beach, we also get our body wet in the waterfall. heaven~
and najah, she really loves the waterfall, but she hate the sea most.
i guess the wide spread of the ocean scares her.

all i can say is that, an island vacation is the only trip that you can 'bermalas-malasan' or snuggling under the blanket all day without 'susah-susah' having to think much or planning whatsoever of what to do next!

+ the speed boat +

+ she's been enjoying herself all the time +

p.s: looking forward for jakarta trip next month! wink wink^^

petanque...let the games begin

i did mention earlier, that i was going to participate in petanque for the UTM staff games
the match was last week and it was also the first time that PSZ sent a team
haha we are such a newbies!
well, i am the most noob one because the others have played petanque before..pfttt!
but sadly, we lost at quarter final~

better luck next year team!

+ the players: abul, idham, fiza, me +

this week will be the last week for my korean lesson
내가하게도
but the not so best part will be the final exam!
arghh...
